POP PIE a great place to try!

Not to be confused with Popeye, the spinach eating guy in the cartoon!

In a mood for a light meal?

Well, Tainan has many beautiful hidden places to eat, and this has to be one of the most hidden ones. But make sure not to miss it, since it has great pies and a magical atmosphere.

Here is the location:

The place is cosy and well decorated, check it out!

Ok, so it is time to order!

You are usually required to order a set, it includes a soup and a well dressed salad. Check out the nice detail of giving you a wooden spoon!

The soup I got is pumpkin and the pie I order is mushroom and chicken.  It was a great combination and they were both of great taste. I absolutely recommend this place to change the daily routine of the traditional lunch boxes in Taiwan.

The coffee I ordered is a Vienna cafe, it was good, but nothing extra-ordinary. But overall I liked it!

They also offer green tea. Just as the coffee it was good, not nothing too memorable.

So conclusion, the drinks are just ok, but the pies are delicious, it is a place worth giving a try.

The picture of the Confucius Temple arch are beautiful, if you missed them, you can check then out here. However there is certain margin of crossing the street and admiring it from the other side. And this is what we got, with a touch of the hectic life of Tainan.

For the best in town, the Arful Dodger’s deserves a crown

I am rating this awesome place because it is one of my favourites, but it is not necessary to state how good it is, because everybody already knows that this place is incredible. I just want to let more people know what they are missing if they haven’t tried it. Although it is very easy to find physically and online, since it has already been rated and talked about in many other web pages. But perhaps you just came to Tainan and just don’t know where to go for a great meal. Here, let me introduce to you the Artful Dodgers.

It is promoted like an English bar/restaurant, but the truth is they not only serve fish-and-chips but western style food. You know, a little bit of Latin American food (like quesadillas), a little bit of North American food (burgers), Mediterranean food (like Greek salad, one of my favourites), and of course, European (meat pies, exquisite English breakfast, and one of the best pasta in town).

Parmesan Chicken

Buffalo Chicken Salad

Quesadilla
Besides their spectacular regular menu, they also have specials, varying from roast beef, to curry and other special dishes.  The place is truly awesome. Personally I love to get brunch here, as the atmosphere makes feel more like in Europe than in Taiwan. And the service is also very good, the staff always receive you with a welcoming gesture, either in English or in Chinese

But my favourite time to go is Friday night, it is lady’s night and we girls get discount on drinks, plus an absolutely delicious truffle.

Their drinks menu is also a good reason to go, great variety of beer, cocktails and wine.  If you have wandered in the wine section of this blog, you will be able to find their red Cabernet Sauvignon and the newly added Pinot Grigio.

No matter the time of the day, I just simply love to go there with my friends and share together a wonderful time.

Now, let me tell you a little anecdote… When I first discovered this place, I noticed that my male friends took unexpected long time in the bathroom, but, of course, it would not have been polite to ask. One day, one of my friends came out staring at a picture in his phone and then enthusiastically showed us. We felt a little awkward, but then it all became clear.  There is a Titanic poster with details about the ship, take a look:

If you are in Tainan and feel like a wonderful none-Asian meal, here is your place to go.

Bordeaux – Puisseguin Saint-Emilion

Bordeaux! What a blessing for the world of wine! And, this one was particularly outstanding, as it was carefully chosen by my favourite French friends. It was a lovely movie night!

This wine felt soft and shy but at the same time rather elegant. It felt refined, as its smell was pleasant and not aggressive at all. It was or dark ruby red and well layered.

Personally, I really enjoy how French people are into the Bordeaux wines, and the magical thing is that they never dissapoint me. I can’t wait to get another recomendarion from you guys!

Pinot Grigio – Santa Margherita

I previously posted about the red wine served at amazing Artful Dodgers. And now they have a new delightful Pinot Grigio.

The moment they showed me the bottle, I knew it was going to be good, as I have previously tested the magnificent Cuveé Pinot also Santa Margherita. I wasn’t wrong.

Soft in colour and smell, but matching perfectly that delicious Parmesan Chicken they have.  It is a highly layered wine, grapes, guavas and a touch of peaches at the end. Fruity at the beginning, sour in the middle and the end left a little bitterness. So, as I said,  it is very well layered.

If you are interested in knowing what is Arful dodgers red wine, here it is

Moscato – Dilé

As promised when writing about Queen Adelaide, which is an excellent Moscato, I am now writing about a very different one.

White wines should be get better when chilled, as I had previously stated in my post “Why do white wines are better when chilled?”  Curiously this one got better when not too cold.  At the first sip, I would have not given it more than 2.6/5 but as we kept on drinking, it became more like 3.3/5. If you have read the wine ranks, you would know that this is a lot, since it changed from “don’t drink this” to “Ok, not so bad” status.

The problem with this Moscato is that it is too sweet! However, I am not saying it is absolutely bad, it was layered and it was possible to feel some Peaches and Guavas. Its color was absolutely beautiful, and just look at the bottle, it is really unique, and that was the reason we got it. If you are looking to make some wine pictures, it is a good choice.

Fruitiness: 3.9/5

Bordeaux Supérieur

This post is special is a special one. I needed special guests in order to do it.

This is wine is also not sold in Taiwan, just like CASTELMAURE, it was brought directly from France. And the thing is, French wines are a piece of art. There is nothing simple about them and when done properly, they are an adventure for one’s senses.  This beauty was not the exception.

Dark beautiful ruby and strong steady smell. High in tannin but well balance so that it agrees with your paladar. With many different layers so that you can feel the different grapes and fruits of the Bordeaux region. Lovely!

Fruitiness 3.3/5

Sourness : 3.8/5

Tannin 4.3/5

The only reason I have to rate this awesomeness a little harsh, is because I know that France has higher standards. For Taiwan, I would rate it about 4.6/5, but according to GG, who kindly shared it with me and Grexxen, it is about a 4/5.

Moscato – Queen Adelaide

As a fan of Moscatos, I am writing about his one with great pride. It felt like a royalty drink. I have to be honest, it is not very expensive, and because of the price I thought it was going to be very bad. It wasn’t!

Beautiful color, delicious smell, perfectly balanced. Not too sweet and bothers my tongue and not too sour. It was absolutely perfect. Highly recommended! Queen Adelaide for all amazing people out there.

Special thanks to the Salty Avocado, who chose this wine and it was great to enjoy our last Taiwan movie night! Looking forward for the next one!

Globalization has come to Tainan’s Night Markets.

Aren’t night markets just amazing? It the first thing you gotta do when you visit a city in Taiwan! You can eat, drink, shop and even play some fair games.

They are crowded and noisy but at the same time lively and fun. One can never leave the night market with an empty stomach or a frown. And they are one of the things that throughout the years that I have lived in Taiwan, they never changed. Sure some of the store aren’t there any more and there are new ones instead, but the culture of the night market never changed.

As amazing as the can be, there was always one tiny thing that is slightly annoying. It is really bad when you first come to Taiwan, and then, with time one learns to accept the reality, and that is, vendors are not going to speak English. Off all the stores, maybe just around 10% of them have English menu, and the for rest you just gotta use your ability of sight and smell to know what they are selling. This is not such a terrible thing, since it works most of the times, but also it happens very often that one can misjudge a certain food. This could be disgusting or tragic, disgusting becase perhaps something you though was going to be delicious isn’t, and tragic because you restrain yourself from eating something you might actually really enjoy.

But guess what? Tainan is changing!!!

A few weeks back we were invited to an activity. It was supposed to be a foreigners friendly night. We were told that they were going to take us to the night market and give us some money to spend there. Well, it is a free ride and free money, so let’s go. What we didn’t know is that the best was yet to come!!!

It was not only the foreigners friendly night, but the beginning of a new era for Tainan night markets. As it turn out the Tainan’s city government, with the support of STUST (Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology ) organized a program where students help night market vendors to translate their menu into English. The students get to practice their English while contributing to society and the vendors get their menus in English for free.

Sadly some of the vendors refused to take part of this initiative indicating that they do not need it. In some cases it is because they already had English menus. Either the case, from now on, the foreigner friendly stores will have a flag indicating the English service.

This service is only found in Tadong Night Market (Open on Monday, Tuesday and Friday), WuSheng Night Market (Open on Wednesday) and the Flower Garden Night Market (Open on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday)

Congratulations and thanks are in orders to the organizers of this service.

I am personally proud and deeply happy to see this happening.

Just like this Tainan, this beautiful city, is taking part of the inevitable globalization.

Poem – A Scooter Story

This is a poem about my tiny white scooter. She came to me on Nov.11th 2009 and ever since then we became partners in crime. When we ride together, it is as if we are one and no one can defeat us. Riding my scooter has been one of the best parts of Taiwan. It is the excitement, it is the adrenaline, it is the wind in my face, it is the speed, it is everything.

I love my scooter, even though she isn’t the newest or the better-one, she is for me, she is the best scooter ever. I hope you enjoy my poem and perhaps some of you share similar feeling with you own ride.

This is a poem on the shape of AAA.

The topic proposed by the sweet and great friend blogger, the saltyavocado.

This topic was proposed, because this is one of the things we can experience the most while being in Taiwan, scooters, a sea of scooter. Not one, not a few, but uncountable scooters. Making Taiwan’s traffic messy and yet smooth,  convenient and very importantly an adventurous.

A Scooter Story

by Adriana

A long time ago on an autumn’s day

I came to you and you came my way.

You looked and we knew this wasn’t fey.

With inexperience, you asked questions odd

And it seemed to me that you never rode

a machine like me in your country abroad.

But you started my engine and I swear

That I’d never felt such passion and dare

Yet gently, of my faulty leaky parts you took care.

Not long after, without many doubts and reflections

You took me around without knowing the directions

But we managed to go back after more than a few questions

In time, you got me a blue sticker that says “Guatever”

And soon after a curious-gecko one to wear wherever

But our uniqueness is in your colorful helmet now and ever.

Of tiny white carcass, but full of unmatchable speed

That’s how you trained me, to be unbeatable in any need

But always avoiding anything that could make us bleed.

As time goes on, we go to uncountable places together

We never cared if there was cold, sunny or rainy weather.

But I know you like you ride with your jacket made of leather.

I am exactly made for one, not for three and not for none.

But I have to admit that recently it has been a lot of fun

When Grex, Jess and you and hop and ride on.

You hold tight to each other as if you were going to fall

But you know and trust that even though I am small

I am sturdy, defiant and keep balance above all.

One day your time to leave me will come

But our adventures and stories will live on

I and will remain the great scooter that with you I have become.

I hope you enjoy my poem.  FOLLOW my blog if you did. Now go on and give me a LIKE!
