A Smile in Confucius Temple – Poem

Tainan is the former capital of Taiwan, therefore is marked by historical monuments and constructions. Now is a beautiful combination of modern life and the past times. In the heart of Tainan, behind the Literature Museums, there is the Confucius temple. The place is small, but really beautiful and its significance is remarkable. After all, Confucius is known as the teacher of teacher.

Last year made two entries about photography at Tainan’s Confucius Temple. I hope you can check it out, so you can get further idea of how the temple look like from outside.

Tainan Confucius Temple and Across Confucius Temple

The temple is located in Nan-Men Rd, it is usually opened from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

Teacher’s day in Taiwan is celebrated on September 28th. As you can imagine Teacher’s day happens to be Confucius day! So if you are in Tainan during this time make sure to check out the activities the have. As far as I know there is a ceremony at 4am, I hope you don’t have a problem in waking up early.

This poem in the type of ABAB.

Now without any further delay I give you:

A Smile in Confucius Temple

by Adriana

There! In a far away city that never sleeps

Where the center is marked merly by the station

Behind the museum that pictograms keeps,

of great Chinese literature yet without any translation.

Behind the museums lies a temple of knowledge

Surrounded by pagodas, quite winds, and shadowy trees,

Gates carefully placed and wandering students of college.

Welcoming doors and a beguiling detailed marquee.

There! At the entrance, you are offered a ticket by the lady

Without forgetting to ask for your ID before paying the fee

You’ll be surprise there is none if you’ve been living in Tainan lately

And in a instant you’ll further love this city by the sea.

A high step before you go in,

you are welcome by thousands wishes and lucky writings

But your attention is drawn to the magnificent temple within

As the sun shines upon the walls and splendid sightings.

Long halls of relics and history

Musical instruments, studies and time

Gods, dragons, phoenixes, and mysteries

All here in coherence as a physical rhyme.

Oh Confucius Temple! Such a honorable vision!

The first of its kind in the wonderful island of Taiwan

A school not only of letters but of talent and religion

An enduring philosophy of life that will continue on.

You! You are never ending tale

Your walls an ungoing fable

You are a landmark of great scale

To forget you, one is unable.

There! There I stood in front of you

Perplexed and overwhelmed

Reminded that mother was there too

And thus a smile was compelled.

Tiny Yellow Flowers – Aug 22 #Photography

Like pieces of gold on the road

so vivid, and calm in still mode,

With your beauty my pace slowed,

for a picture that I now upload!

POP PIE a great place to try!

Not to be confused with Popeye, the spinach eating guy in the cartoon!

In a mood for a light meal?

Well, Tainan has many beautiful hidden places to eat, and this has to be one of the most hidden ones. But make sure not to miss it, since it has great pies and a magical atmosphere.

Here is the location:

The place is cosy and well decorated, check it out!

Ok, so it is time to order!

You are usually required to order a set, it includes a soup and a well dressed salad. Check out the nice detail of giving you a wooden spoon!

The soup I got is pumpkin and the pie I order is mushroom and chicken.  It was a great combination and they were both of great taste. I absolutely recommend this place to change the daily routine of the traditional lunch boxes in Taiwan.

The coffee I ordered is a Vienna cafe, it was good, but nothing extra-ordinary. But overall I liked it!

They also offer green tea. Just as the coffee it was good, not nothing too memorable.

So conclusion, the drinks are just ok, but the pies are delicious, it is a place worth giving a try.

Tainan’s Confucius Temple – Aug 15, 17 #Photography

I get my camera and the first that has to be done is go to Confucius Temple and get a nice shot.

This is my first attempt:

Hey! It is not bad, considering that it was my very first shot! But I was a little unsatisfied with this, mostly because I missed the tip of the top. So I went back and with a little practice I get this:

I decided to change the angle since it is possible to see the inner temple from here:

I think I will get slowly get better!

In case you are wondering, the Confucius Temple in Tainan is the first academy school in Taiwan and it was completed in 1665. It is a place of intellectuals and scholars. Nowadays, it is mostly a place for tourists and some Confucian ceremonies, one of the most important ones being on September 28th each year, to celebrate teacher’s day.

Cabernet Sauvignon – Earthbound

Cabernet Sauvignon – South Africa – 2015

In my attempt to try so many other different kinds of wines, I have forgotten to rate and drink more of the classic Cabernet Sauvignon.

It is one of the most popular ones and yet it is an acquired  taste. It is usually well layered and high in tannin. I believe that is were the necessity to mix it with Merlot arises, and we get Bordeaux or  other mixes. Once you know what you are getting into when you have it, then you are sure to enjoy it.

As expected, it is well formed and with a nice bold attitude, however it is too young and lacks of maturity, but it was not disappointing.

Sourness: 4.0/5

Typhoons – The Frenzy of Wind and Rain

July 30th to July 31st

One of the reasons SunShower was born, is because I get instant urge for writing while hearing the rain drops fall. While the rain showers outside, the inspiring sun shines in.

Rain is beautiful, but it does not usually stops me from my daily routines, however typhoons are another thing. The best thing to do is to stay safe inside and not try to risk it. Although typhoons can be very dangerous, they are part of the life experience in Taiwan and cannot be separated from the adventure here.

Tonight is typhoon night. (July 30 and 31st, 2017)

a Typhoon is…

It is a meteorological depression. A storm, but just not any storm, a violent one. There will be a lot of water and strong winds. Not just any water and wind,  rain is more like water-whips, and wind is like giant of destruction.

It will rain for a span between 6 to 20 hours, depending on the size of the typhoon. But what gets really bad is the wind. Sometimes it gets so strong that the rain falls more like horizontally than vertically. I have seen it slide scooters along the street, take down advertisements posts and even rip off entire trees, taking them from theirs very roots! Yes! It gets pretty bad.

If you are wondering if typhoons, cyclones and hurricanes are the same, then let me tell you that YES! They are basically the same, the difference is just the area of the world they occur. They can all be very devastating.

Typhoons are to be respected, they flood cities, destroy towns and sometimes even take human lives with them. If one of the great typhoons come knocking your door while you are here, remember, you can never be too safe. Be prepare!

My recommendation is to get food and water, and more importantly try not to go out. I have never experience a blackout in Taiwan, but I know they happen, so you might want to prepare a flashlight and something none-electronic to be entertained with.

But…

Typhoons aren’t that bad. If you keep safe and are well prepared, you will get to be at home with a justified reason. This is why many locals actually like typhoons and sometimes receive it gladly. The national government is likely to cancel classes and work. You can check for this here: Central Wether Bureau

go to “Typhoon News” and then check if work and class have been cancelled.

Over all, the chances you live through an extreme typhoon are very slim.  They are mostly common, during August and September and although there are many, the ones that get to Taiwan are about 3-4 in a year and not every time they will affect the city where you live.

For the 8 years that I have lived in Taiwan, I have always been safe from Typhoons. It is just a matter of staying safe and once you have this much free time, try to catch up with you blog. My friend, Grexxen, wrote things to do during a typhoon last year and you might want to check out his post.

The Frenzy of Wind and Rain

Although Typhoons are really strong, I prefer to see them as a passionate moment of two lovers. Wind and Rain, desperately love each other, but because their love is so destructive, they are destined to live separately most of the year and in most places of the world. Sometimes they flirt with each other, maybe you have felt the wind’s warm touch on your face, when it drizzle in the afternoon. But then, summer comes, and low pressures in the atmosphere allows them to be together, if  just for a few hours.

I give you…

The Frenzy of Wind and Rain

By Adriana

Last year, devastating was the goodbye

as they kissed each other for the last time,

now, more than 10 months have gone by.

A love so strong full of passion and desire

silently waiting to be admired,

nothing can put down their lust on fire

During the time apart to the mountain she talks,

sometime promising to wipe clear his slopes

but he knows she cannot handle his heart full of rocks.

He, on his side, converses with the beauty river

sometimes promising to make of her a wider mirror

but she knows, a flow to wide will make humans shiver.

Strong, striking souls with  power of size abysmal

yet tenderness can be found on their touch and whistle,

maybe you felt it during your walk on the afternoon drizzle.

Every day they wait for each other restlessly

their love is intense but full of complexity

because being together brings catastrophe

But the relaxing summer days are here

bringing low pressure, like every year

with some luck, our lovers can now come near.

First they see each other over the island far away,

and the thunder sounds as if they are playing croquet.

I can see from my window that the sky is now gray.

They seduce each other with words so charming,

it starts raining with love, passion and all the yearning.

Though my window I can see that it is now violently storming

As a gentlemen he has made the first move

then she follows, blowing a kiss to approve

and we feel how the breeze has now stronger groove.

The lovers cannot take the distance any longer

in less than a second it is impossible to go and wander

’cause the passion and strength keeps getting stronger

They have only but a few hours to together spend

They have to count, they know the are condemned ,

so they forget about the world and who they might offend.

Unstoppable Rain pours while Wind loudly howls

but it filters through the window during the long night hours,

this much water is impossible to dry. I need more towels!

Don’t get them wrong, their raging destruction is  a pantomime

just a protest for being apart all this time

They want to be noticed, their love is transcendental and divine

They accomplisehd their purpose, leaving all this destruction,

but seriously, it isn’t any worse than human corruption

pulluting the oceans and air, just for a few goods production

There is no knowing when will Wind and Rain will meet again

it all goes back to normal and their love is constrain

but their passion is eternal and nothing vain.

The end.

Poem – Angelic

A poem from the challenge word “Cure”. Proposed by the exceptionally admirable blogger and poet Grexxen. Thank you for encouraging me forward!

A story about curiosity, bravery, and about overcoming all obstacles.  A story that evidences the power of love.

A poem on the shape of a AABBCC

I give you,

Angelic

by Adriana

In one of the angelic realms of heaven so high

Where light, peace and harmony live a beautiful lullaby

Resided a sweet, brave and caring angel, so curious

That for his human to guard was so laborious

For his appointed task, he always performed his best.

No wonder his human was thriving and overcoming every quest.

In the land of the angels, human eyes are never seen

They are all oblivious of height, race and color of skin

Only through prayers a human’s voice is heard

For what is important with he heart is transferred

Their realm is on earth, but there is a barrier so thin

Humans can not cross it, and angles rarely fly in.

But our sweet, curious angel to heaven’s border came near

Even though, his angelic life he treasured close so dear.

But his heart was unsteady and lured by God’s creation

Dragged his wings too close to the earth mortal damnation

With a little blow of the wind his angel shape was gone

In less than one moment, into a human he had transformed

Naked and nameless for a while he wandered

To the earth rules he now had to abide, he pondered.

Without his wings he needed a little effort for walking

Yet, seamlessly he soon started fluently talking.

Not long after, he acknowledge his human shape

Keeping in mind that soon back to his realm he had to scape.

Guarding his human was his life’s responsibility

It was what he most wanted, so he would find the feasibility

In the coming weeks, to many churches he assisted

Nothing worked but for a long time he persisted

He enjoyed the world and knew that it was not a mistake

Yet, his angelic duty could not be weakened or opaque

But now he was only human, and time made he grow weary

So he kept telling to persuade himself this innocent theory

“The rules are rules and a human I have now to remain.”

He thought with a bitter smile and a tear that could not contain.

Yet he was satisfied and eagerly his new life he would embrace

Like this becoming the first angel to travel the world in slow pace.

To the towns in the mountains, and the ones across the rivers wide

Tirelessly aiding all beings alike without leaving heaven’s guide.

While learning from humans their complexity and behavior,

He slowly understood that in themselves is their only saviour.

So, his unclear purpose on earth brought doubt and overwhelm

What was the reason that he had to remain steady in this realm?

Greatly he had contributed to make the world from all evil, clean

Yet, there was no more satisfaction from all the places he had been

At this moment, inadvertently he came across a new experience,

Dark hair, ruby lips and pale skin was this majestic appearance.

With her forest-green like eyes she made time and space fade

And when she smiled, he felt as his heart had been swayed.

The first acquaintance was awkward, but soon, close friends they were

Yet words for a confession came none, as he could only stand and stare.

Even a heaven’s mightiest warriors, of  this kind of courage have none

For angels do not need it,  they can be alone

But after meeting her, by himself he never wanted to be

And by knowing her, to stay by her side was his only plea.

But she was born smart and had eyes of a good observer

Effortlessly realized that his intentions were full of fervor.

But away she turn her head for she was submerged in regret

As her heart had been shattered and wasn’t healed yet.

Felt like a deadly disease accompany her during the day

Loneliness reside in her soul and wasn’t going away.

She fought trying to get better by keeping friends around

But insecurity swam in her veins and her heart surround

To get rid of the killer-depression virus she had no choice

Since sadness had mortally blocked her cheerful-lively voice

Grief was spreading and happiness was an ineffective lie

And yet everyday woke up and gave the world a big smile

Of her deadly condition, our sweet angel oblivious remain

As his angelic intuition diminished when to earth he came.

Aside of his love he deeply admire her heart, strength and wit.

He believed in her and encourage to her dreams never quit.

As it turns out, someone believing in her was the cure bottle

Now that he complemented her, the air supply no longer throttle.

Her condition stabilized and stop to worsen.

Soon she would be back to be a fully healthy person

His presence and lovely smile had brought her cure

He was right what she needed for her life so obscure

Finally her everyday was brighter

Once again she was her own fighter.

Planning and dreaming to stay together flourished

They needed each other for a happy life nourish.

But the rules are the rules and they must be obeyed

A cruel twist of life suddenly arrived to invade.

For his coming to earth was not a random circumstance

She was his human, who he had to guard at all chance.

When he heard her prayers of the truth he realised

That it was all part of the plan of the heaven’s device.

When her faith had faded away and he was sent to Earth

To help her find the way  before she encounter death.

Now that the mission had ended and all been completed

Going back to heaven left their hearts broken and depleted.

Tears of hopelessness rolled down and reached the floor

When they hugged for the last time on the sunset shore.

She softly kissed him and slowly closed her eyes

And when she opened them, he was gone to the skies.

She would rarely spoke of the painful, bitter goodbye

For days she would not sleep or eat but only cry and cry

Since that day, he had to guard her from his land

Unable to even see her, because that is banned.

Her voice is her prayers he would always hear

Wishing from his heart that they could be near.

But the rules cannot be broken, twisted or bent,

So, there wasn’t any plan that could their situation amend

She fervently prayed to the archangels so mighty,

Being careful of  her words and speaking politely.

She pleaded to have him back or at least to have a trial

But how could she know? He never spoke of the guile.

But since she loved him so much, it was easy to conjecture

She realised of  his life on heavens and earth adventures

For the first time they angels set up an official court

And for many days they discussed, spoke and revoke.

Her intense prayers, they could not longer ignore

Pleading for him to come back and be with her forevermore.

A decision was taken and there was nothing to be done

He was set free and could now to human’s realm be gone

They were equally each other’s cure from mortal death

And for many years they lived happily together on Earth.

Now, I sat to write their story for your heart’s delight

Of a kind of love that will forever live in the heights

I am true witness of this curious case of love’s reich

For in my veins there is angle and human blood alike.

-The end-

Thank you for reading!

My dear follower,  I hope that my poem you enjoyed

Whether it filled your heart with sorrow or perhaps joy.

My only desire is that my hands of poems never rest

So, I dare you to put my talent to the test.

To one single rule you have, though to abide

Challenge me with a single word for me to comply!!!

For the best in town, the Arful Dodger’s deserves a crown

I am rating this awesome place because it is one of my favourites, but it is not necessary to state how good it is, because everybody already knows that this place is incredible. I just want to let more people know what they are missing if they haven’t tried it. Although it is very easy to find physically and online, since it has already been rated and talked about in many other web pages. But perhaps you just came to Tainan and just don’t know where to go for a great meal. Here, let me introduce to you the Artful Dodgers.

It is promoted like an English bar/restaurant, but the truth is they not only serve fish-and-chips but western style food. You know, a little bit of Latin American food (like quesadillas), a little bit of North American food (burgers), Mediterranean food (like Greek salad, one of my favourites), and of course, European (meat pies, exquisite English breakfast, and one of the best pasta in town).

Parmesan Chicken

Buffalo Chicken Salad

Quesadilla
Besides their spectacular regular menu, they also have specials, varying from roast beef, to curry and other special dishes.  The place is truly awesome. Personally I love to get brunch here, as the atmosphere makes feel more like in Europe than in Taiwan. And the service is also very good, the staff always receive you with a welcoming gesture, either in English or in Chinese

But my favourite time to go is Friday night, it is lady’s night and we girls get discount on drinks, plus an absolutely delicious truffle.

Their drinks menu is also a good reason to go, great variety of beer, cocktails and wine.  If you have wandered in the wine section of this blog, you will be able to find their red Cabernet Sauvignon and the newly added Pinot Grigio.

No matter the time of the day, I just simply love to go there with my friends and share together a wonderful time.

Now, let me tell you a little anecdote… When I first discovered this place, I noticed that my male friends took unexpected long time in the bathroom, but, of course, it would not have been polite to ask. One day, one of my friends came out staring at a picture in his phone and then enthusiastically showed us. We felt a little awkward, but then it all became clear.  There is a Titanic poster with details about the ship, take a look:

If you are in Tainan and feel like a wonderful none-Asian meal, here is your place to go.

I saw this wine a few weeks back, but it seamed too special and it called to be drank at a special time. And what other moment than to say good-bye to my good friend Grexxen. It has been amazing to share all this wines and adventures with you.

Going back to the wine, look at the delicate flowers on the label. It had to be some extraordinaty. Dark ruby and strong smell. As it flows in your mouth you start feeling the different layers spread and then right before the end, there is honey. honey? I never expected that, it is worth trying.

Poem – Sight Guards

July 5th, 2017

A poem from the challenge word “GUARD”. Proposed by the exceptional blogger and poet Grexxen.

In a world where love is taken for granted, the act of actually protecting and guarding love ones is not as appreciated as it should be. Feelings, emotions and friendships need to be sheltered.  When trust is laid on somebody, an intrinsic responsibility of guarding that trust is also is also laid on the-now guard. Silently the guard acknowledges the other person’s vulnerability, and now has the honour to secure it.

A poem on the shape of a AABBAA CCDDC

I give you,

Sight Guards

by Adriana

A long time back, on a pale autumn’s day,

we set sight on each other, unable to look away.

Perplexed we stood in awe

for in our eyes we saw

eagerness to be wondered of all coulours, even gray,

and an unexplicable light that lures excitment here to stay.

Beguiling eyes, so smart

that speak a language to my heart

that tell no lies,

have no disguise

So, I guard all their stories since the start.

The power of your eyes is like a potion,

that stops the world and all its motion.

Of hues as the lagoon,

and bright as the moon.

They are deep and vast as the esoteric ocean,

guarding their wisdom is my only devotion

Your sight has a voice that speaks and even sings

of lost number, beauty and forgotten high kings

your eyes tell a story

of truth and glory

that I consistently guard with unbreakable strings.

Years passed and I crossed the wildest of desert dunes

Travelled the six continents by only hot-air balloons

Climbed the highest mountains

Swam in the deepest fountains

But I could never forget the time of those magical afternoons,

so siletly I promised to forever guard your eyes and their musical tunes.

Today, although silver shades cover my head, you came and confessed

that all this time being a guarding of my eyes was also your quest.

excitement in my eyes flared

when into our eyes I stared,

and saw the new life that was waiting for us to eagerly address.

White Bordeaux – Moelleux

And there I was thinking that Bordeaux was only a reference to Red Wine.

This post is special, because it two of my most wonderful French friends made the honorable selection. They did warned me that it would be really sweet, but I was confident as I have tried many moscatos. I though they were going to be similar. I was wrong!

They are totally different. The white Bordeaux was an incredible surprise, as it was so sweet that that there was basically no sourness to taste and yet different layers of fruits could be tasted.

I personally do not like wines that are too sweet, but this was an comfortable encounter.

Globalization has come to Tainan’s Night Markets.

Aren’t night markets just amazing? It the first thing you gotta do when you visit a city in Taiwan! You can eat, drink, shop and even play some fair games.

They are crowded and noisy but at the same time lively and fun. One can never leave the night market with an empty stomach or a frown. And they are one of the things that throughout the years that I have lived in Taiwan, they never changed. Sure some of the store aren’t there any more and there are new ones instead, but the culture of the night market never changed.

As amazing as the can be, there was always one tiny thing that is slightly annoying. It is really bad when you first come to Taiwan, and then, with time one learns to accept the reality, and that is, vendors are not going to speak English. Off all the stores, maybe just around 10% of them have English menu, and the for rest you just gotta use your ability of sight and smell to know what they are selling. This is not such a terrible thing, since it works most of the times, but also it happens very often that one can misjudge a certain food. This could be disgusting or tragic, disgusting becase perhaps something you though was going to be delicious isn’t, and tragic because you restrain yourself from eating something you might actually really enjoy.

But guess what? Tainan is changing!!!

A few weeks back we were invited to an activity. It was supposed to be a foreigners friendly night. We were told that they were going to take us to the night market and give us some money to spend there. Well, it is a free ride and free money, so let’s go. What we didn’t know is that the best was yet to come!!!

It was not only the foreigners friendly night, but the beginning of a new era for Tainan night markets. As it turn out the Tainan’s city government, with the support of STUST (Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology ) organized a program where students help night market vendors to translate their menu into English. The students get to practice their English while contributing to society and the vendors get their menus in English for free.

Sadly some of the vendors refused to take part of this initiative indicating that they do not need it. In some cases it is because they already had English menus. Either the case, from now on, the foreigner friendly stores will have a flag indicating the English service.

This service is only found in Tadong Night Market (Open on Monday, Tuesday and Friday), WuSheng Night Market (Open on Wednesday) and the Flower Garden Night Market (Open on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday)

Congratulations and thanks are in orders to the organizers of this service.

I am personally proud and deeply happy to see this happening.

Just like this Tainan, this beautiful city, is taking part of the inevitable globalization.

This a poem from the Challenger: SaltyAvocado, the words is “Bulgogi”. It was an interestingly funny topic, because it is a wrap prepared with Korean seasoned meat sold at COSTCO. It is a very tasty and very filling, but the best part is how cute “Bulgogi” sounds.

Not only I was challenge by this word, but also Grexxen, so let’s see how he does.

It is a poem on the shape of: AABB

and now I give you

Bulgogi

This topic as random as it may appear

is a challenge word from a person so dear.

Proposed by this girl nice and sweet

who knew how to make Grex and I compete.

Bulgogi is the meat in this wrap so good

that you wouldn’t believe it is Korean food.

Cheese and seasoning are mixed inside,

something this good should spread worldwide.

At the sound of the word, one has got to smile

that’s why I am making this poem freestyle.

But the more I write I want to stop and get to Costco

and with my dear friends share a Bulgogi pronto.

Liked it? What do you think? Let me know in the comments, and why not become a challenger?

Let me know!

The Dragon Boat Festival – Euphoric and Exceptional

Oh the dragon boat! What a fantastic time to be in Asia, and in our case, in the wondrous Taiwan. This is a great festival specially if you or any of your friends is taking part of the competition. Even if you are not, you get extra holidays off, a night market that takes places during the day near your local river and Rice Dumplings, rice dumplings everywhere.

Poem – A Scooter Story

This is a poem about my tiny white scooter. She came to me on Nov.11th 2009 and ever since then we became partners in crime. When we ride together, it is as if we are one and no one can defeat us. Riding my scooter has been one of the best parts of Taiwan. It is the excitement, it is the adrenaline, it is the wind in my face, it is the speed, it is everything.

I love my scooter, even though she isn’t the newest or the better-one, she is for me, she is the best scooter ever. I hope you enjoy my poem and perhaps some of you share similar feeling with you own ride.

This is a poem on the shape of AAA.

The topic proposed by the sweet and great friend blogger, the saltyavocado.

This topic was proposed, because this is one of the things we can experience the most while being in Taiwan, scooters, a sea of scooter. Not one, not a few, but uncountable scooters. Making Taiwan’s traffic messy and yet smooth,  convenient and very importantly an adventurous.

A Scooter Story

by Adriana

A long time ago on an autumn’s day

I came to you and you came my way.

You looked and we knew this wasn’t fey.

With inexperience, you asked questions odd

And it seemed to me that you never rode

a machine like me in your country abroad.

But you started my engine and I swear

That I’d never felt such passion and dare

Yet gently, of my faulty leaky parts you took care.

Not long after, without many doubts and reflections

You took me around without knowing the directions

But we managed to go back after more than a few questions

In time, you got me a blue sticker that says “Guatever”

And soon after a curious-gecko one to wear wherever

But our uniqueness is in your colorful helmet now and ever.

Of tiny white carcass, but full of unmatchable speed

That’s how you trained me, to be unbeatable in any need

But always avoiding anything that could make us bleed.

As time goes on, we go to uncountable places together

We never cared if there was cold, sunny or rainy weather.

But I know you like you ride with your jacket made of leather.

I am exactly made for one, not for three and not for none.

But I have to admit that recently it has been a lot of fun

When Grex, Jess and you and hop and ride on.

You hold tight to each other as if you were going to fall

But you know and trust that even though I am small

I am sturdy, defiant and keep balance above all.

One day your time to leave me will come

But our adventures and stories will live on

I and will remain the great scooter that with you I have become.

I hope you enjoy my poem.  FOLLOW my blog if you did. Now go on and give me a LIKE!

Eating at Nantai St.

Luuuuuuuuuuuunch time, but what should you eat? There is a great variety of food in Nantai St. that you just gotta love. But still, between all these wonderful choices you might not know where to go. Let me help you a little, here is a list of the restaurants I like best. I take into consideration the price, quality of food and cleanness. Let me know if you also agree with this list.

Before starting the list I want to make room for a special guest.

AINA

This is not really for lunch, but they are open from 6am to 2pm, and they do have lunch selections. But their breakfast is so good that it is perfectly fine to have it as brunch.

Between the copier store in the corner and Yo-yo.

Some people call it the “triangle store”, due to the food triangle at the back. They have good service, good food, they keep clean and they have English menu. [I know ’cause I translated it =). ]

Aina Brunch Menu A3-1

I personally like the Chinese Omelette with ham and corn. But why not try the one with bacon and cheese?  They also have the american breakfast and the delicious, never disappointing club sandwiches.

If you are looking for something sweet, they also have jam, chocolate and a luring coconut butter, you gotta try it.

If you are just looking for breakfast and Aina is close, try the store in the front. They are also good, and also have English menu.

This is my Friend Jessie, posing with the triangle.

And now,

Top 5 of great place for lunch at Nantai St.

5. Turkey Store.

It is very easy to miss, since there there is only a small turkey in their menu. But they sell these excellent Turkey sliced meat, with 4 different types of vegetable that you can chose. Very healthy, specially because you can ask them to give you more vegetables instead of rice.

4. Honey Pork

They sell exactly that. There is a nice piece of fried pork and they cover it with a honey sauce. You can chose 3 types of vegetables. And It only costs NTD 60. In their menu it is the first option.

They also have Honey Chicken, but I usually do not take that one, because it comes with bones.

3. Dumplings store

This is a chain of stores. They have the very famous dumplings and the absolutely delicious fried dumplings. Between the options they have Korean kimchi flavor, curry and corn.   I like to take them with some noodles, either in soup or dried.

I am sure you will love this place.

2. Hot Plate

Actually there are many names international students refer to this restaurant. The cat’s place, the wooden restaurant or hot plate.

I fell in love with this place with their chicken gratin rice with mushroom sauce. But one of the favorite selections are the sizzling noodles with different sauces and chicken or meat.

One of the things I love about this place it the service, they have English menu and there is corn soup for you to take. They also bring you a nice pitcher of black tea, and overall the owner is very nice.

Special Honours

Italian place

It is not really Italian, and the Eiffel tower in their wall, makes you doubt what kind of food they were aiming for. If you got there expecting Italian food, you will end up disappointing, but if what you want is a good meal, then it is your place.

The reason I did not rank it higher is because it is probably the most expensive of all. Notice that in all the other restaurants you will spend between NTD 60 – 90, but this Italian place is more than NTD 100.

They have good curry, nice puff soup and one of the few places that have western cutlery. The place is nice, clean and it has aircon. You won’t be disappointed

1.Purple store.

They have great variety, and prices. Noodles, spaghetti, fried rice, instant noodle, gratin rice, clamp soup. All of these in a nice, clean restaurant. I will not speak anymore, as just talking about this place makes me hungry, you just gotta try it.

Other nice restaurants around Nantai

Pizza bar.

Not really pizza, more like bread with tomato sauce and cheese, but the place is really nice.

Restaurants a little farther Away

Fried Rice Behind S Building.

It is a little hidden and not many people know about it, but it has THE BEST fried rice around.  Don’t miss it.

Steak

It is on the main street, sizzling hot plate with noodles and real meat. You’ll love it.

Date

Well, it is absolutely a great place, I should rank it as the best, but it is way more fancier that anything else around, of course more expensive, but it is worthy.

Japanese Restaurant

It is on the way to the hot pot. It is not between my favorites, but I many of my friends like it, so why not give it a try.

The Hot Pot

If it is your first time in Asia, you can’t miss eating Hot Pot. They will bring the food raw and give you hot pot where you can cook it. This particular hot pot is perfect for first timers, because you can order just what you want to eat. You will love this place at the same time that you will be really full.

This awesome place opens at 4 pm and closes at 2 am

There are so many awesome places around here, and the list is not over, I will be soon posting about late night snacks! Don’t miss it.

I have to admit, my friends and I had a lot of fun for the sake of this post. So I hope you enjoy eating at Nantai St. as much as we do.

Special thanks to: Grexxen and theSaltyAvocado for posing for me in the pictures and accompany throughout this post.

Would you rank the restaurants in the same way? Tell in me in the comments. And now that we are at it, why not go on and FOLLOW this amazing blog. LIKE?

Thesis Final Presentation – Encouragement and Useful Tips

You wake up in the morning, everything is normal, everything is as it should be. For a few moments your eyes still think it is just another ordinary day, except you suddenly realize, it isn’t.

You have work so hard for it, you know the theory, you have done the research, you have discussed it, you have written it, you have prepare it, now it is time, time for the culmination, time your thesis oral defense.

My field is engineering, but I have seen many friends in the field of business and art graduate and culminate their studies with a beautiful outstanding oral presentation. The following are some advises, encouragements and tips gather from my experience and my close relationships. I hope that if you are in this exciting moment of your life, this article can contribute, even if it is just a little, to that one last step you need to take before graduation.

Welcome to the beginning of the rest of your life

Actually, this process began when you chose to make a degree, whether it is a bachelor, master, Ph.D or other. The day you decided to take this step, your life changed. But you didn’t do it for a piece of paper, you did it for the knowledge, for the challenge, for the opportunities, you did it for you. That’s what this day is about, it is about you, your effort, your dedication, your passion, and it is about your future.

Am my words making you nervous? I think not, you already know the importance of this day.  Your heart beats loud and fast, your mind is unsteady and perhaps your hands are sweaty,  but don’t worry, this is normal. We all got nervous on that day, even if some people do not show it, or show it other ways, we all got nervous. Let me give you some encouraging words for that and at the same time let me give you some tips to excel on this magnificent day.

Before you start

I hope you get the chance to read this article before you even chose a topic, but if you didn’t then I hope you knew this.

Choosing your Topic

1. Be passionate about it.

Perhaps one of the most important points is choosing something you are truthfully interested in. If you like something you are going to be more motivated to finish it well. Plus, you will not think of it as a duty you have to complete. You will put more of yourself if what you are researching really wakes up your interest. So, DO NOT chose a topic just because there is nothing else. Ask yourself why would you want to do that? After all you are going to be spending a few months with it. The attitude towards your projects can be de defining point between succeeding or not. As the matter of fact, is THE defining point, so if you don’t love it, learn to love it.

2. Be relevant.

It does not matter your field or your interests, you have to think of something that people will be interested in.  It is perfectly fine if you want to talk about “taking naps”. You just gotta present it in a way that it is useful for humanity and for the improvement of society. Instead of “relevant” I like to use the word “transcendental”, because ideally your topic will contribute to make the world a better place.

Choosing the right Advisor.

Depending on the field of study, you may first chose your advisor and then your topic, or if not you search of a topic you are interested in and then chose your advisor. Either the way, make sure you that the person guiding you is the right person. The comunication you have with him or her is of extreme relevance to the outcome. Does this person gets the best out of you? Does he or she inspires you?

You advisor will soon become your colleague and not only your professor. Your relationship should be smooth and friendly enough to work side by side. Remember, you will be meeting this person often, and that person will be grading you, your communication has to be good.

Developing the thesis

Let us assume that you love and you are passionate about topic. Let us also assume that your advisor is the best one you could have.

1. Research

The only thing that will make your thesis flourish is reading others work and studying it. Notice that I am not saying “reading it” I said “studying”. On each of the journal papers your read, you have to stop analyse them, squeeze them and get all the useful stuff from it. This takes time but it is needful.

When I was doing my master thesis, I read about 5-8 journals a week and then discuss them with my advisor, because by repeating all the acquired information you make sure you learn it. It was habit of my research  lab that we had to present and discuss with all the group, at least one journal a week.  This way we get more brain storm, not only from the advisor but from the other students.

2. Discuss

Not only with your advisor or lab group, discuss your research with everybody. It will not only make you feel more passionate about it, but you will slowly see if you have flaws or points where you need to improve.  And perhaps you can get extra ideas from different people.

3. Don’t give up

It’s hard, it is complicated, and sometimes you may feel like you will not make it, but you have understand that you are the one who sets limits. Believe in yourself, in your abilities, in your capability. But if you really do not see a good outcome, do not linger too long and change some of the parameters before you have wasted too long on wrong assumptions. But DO NOT give up!

If you give up, you are not ready for the diploma!

Preparing for your oral presentation.

You are the end of the road, you just gotta do this one last step.

You might have had the chance to present before, or maybe this is the only time you are going to do it, either the way, you will be fine. You are the author of your work. While presenting you are the only one in the room who knows and understands fully the topic, not even your advisor is as expert in this field as you are.

1. Watch others

I truly recommend assisting to your friends or classmates and learn from them. The best would be to be present to your avisor’s other advisee’s presentations. Never assume that you are too good that there is nothing you can learn. At least try to assist to 2 defences.

2. Prepare

If possible, have everything ready at least 1 week before. Try not to rush and do things as calmly as possible.

If it is under your possibilities try to get to know a little about the other memeber of your evaluating committee, so you know in advance their interest and what kind of questions they may ask.

3. Make a relevant presentation

You do not need to give too much of theory, the people evaluating you, are likely to already know this. Instead try to spend more time on the things you did. I know it is hard, because your topic is awesome and you also want to show off all the new things there are out there. But do not forget, it is about you and you are the most awesome one.

4. Make clear statements.

You are probably asked to make an outline, it might look something like this:

When you get to the objectives, actually say” The objective of this is…..” and when you get to the conclusion do not forget to make it strong and well defined. Do not be shy to say “It is concluded that…” Or “I concluded that….” . Do not be afraid to use that verb, “To concluded”. By saying it, you will draw the attention and you can finally say your discovery or outcome.

A couple of other tips,

  1. Number our slides
  2. Name your tables and graphs with a number and a short description
  3. When you finish the presentation, set it to a loop, so the first slide comes after the last one.

5. Practice

If you are not used to practice for a presentation , this is not like any presentation, this is your thesis oral defense. So, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Practice at least 2 times with your advisor, the first time when you think you are ready and the second time, after you are sure you are ready. Practice with your friends, practice with our family, and then practice again. It is your deference, there is not such thing as over doing it. If you do not make it, you are going to have to wait to book another date and you won’t be able to graduate when you foresaw it. Don’t screw up all your effort because you didn’t practice enough.

The Thesis Final Oral Presentation

You made it, you are here, and you will succeed!

1. Get a good sleep.

2. Dress appropriate.

3. Be on time.

There is nothing else to say. You will do just fine. Do not ever dare to hesistate that your research unimportant. It isn’t! You have made it this far and it is worthy. You have spend time, effort and probably money on this. People believe in you.  So, do not let the though of “It is nothing, it is not important” cross your mind. Because remember, it is about about, and you are important, you are relevant, you are trascendental.

I hope these encouragements and tips help you, and please let know how you did on your defence.

You do not need luck, I wish you the best of success!!!!

Please note that these are basic ideas and tips. It worked for me, but your case may be different. Take it as a reference.
