July 30th to July 31st
One of the reasons SunShower was born, is because I get instant urge for writing while hearing the rain drops fall. While the rain showers outside, the inspiring sun shines in.
Rain is beautiful, but it does not usually stops me from my daily routines, however typhoons are another thing. The best thing to do is to stay safe inside and not try to risk it. Although typhoons can be very dangerous, they are part of the life experience in Taiwan and cannot be separated from the adventure here.
Tonight is typhoon night. (July 30 and 31st, 2017)
a Typhoon is…
It is a meteorological depression. A storm, but just not any storm, a violent one. There will be a lot of water and strong winds. Not just any water and wind, rain is more like water-whips, and wind is like giant of destruction.
It will rain for a span between 6 to 20 hours, depending on the size of the typhoon. But what gets really bad is the wind. Sometimes it gets so strong that the rain falls more like horizontally than vertically. I have seen it slide scooters along the street, take down advertisements posts and even rip off entire trees, taking them from theirs very roots! Yes! It gets pretty bad.
If you are wondering if typhoons, cyclones and hurricanes are the same, then let me tell you that YES! They are basically the same, the difference is just the area of the world they occur. They can all be very devastating.
Typhoons are to be respected, they flood cities, destroy towns and sometimes even take human lives with them. If one of the great typhoons come knocking your door while you are here, remember, you can never be too safe. Be prepare!
My recommendation is to get food and water, and more importantly try not to go out. I have never experience a blackout in Taiwan, but I know they happen, so you might want to prepare a flashlight and something none-electronic to be entertained with.
But…
Typhoons aren’t that bad. If you keep safe and are well prepared, you will get to be at home with a justified reason. This is why many locals actually like typhoons and sometimes receive it gladly. The national government is likely to cancel classes and work. You can check for this here: Central Wether Bureau
go to “Typhoon News” and then check if work and class have been cancelled.
Over all, the chances you live through an extreme typhoon are very slim. They are mostly common, during August and September and although there are many, the ones that get to Taiwan are about 3-4 in a year and not every time they will affect the city where you live.
For the 8 years that I have lived in Taiwan, I have always been safe from Typhoons. It is just a matter of staying safe and once you have this much free time, try to catch up with you blog. My friend, Grexxen, wrote things to do during a typhoon last year and you might want to check out his post.
The Frenzy of Wind and Rain
Although Typhoons are really strong, I prefer to see them as a passionate moment of two lovers. Wind and Rain, desperately love each other, but because their love is so destructive, they are destined to live separately most of the year and in most places of the world. Sometimes they flirt with each other, maybe you have felt the wind’s warm touch on your face, when it drizzle in the afternoon. But then, summer comes, and low pressures in the atmosphere allows them to be together, if just for a few hours.
I give you…
The Frenzy of Wind and Rain
By Adriana
Last year, devastating was the goodbye
as they kissed each other for the last time,
now, more than 10 months have gone by.
A love so strong full of passion and desire
silently waiting to be admired,
nothing can put down their lust on fire
During the time apart to the mountain she talks,
sometime promising to wipe clear his slopes
but he knows she cannot handle his heart full of rocks.
He, on his side, converses with the beauty river
sometimes promising to make of her a wider mirror
but she knows, a flow to wide will make humans shiver.
Strong, striking souls with power of size abysmal
yet tenderness can be found on their touch and whistle,
maybe you felt it during your walk on the afternoon drizzle.
Every day they wait for each other restlessly
their love is intense but full of complexity
because being together brings catastrophe
But the relaxing summer days are here
bringing low pressure, like every year
with some luck, our lovers can now come near.
First they see each other over the island far away,
and the thunder sounds as if they are playing croquet.
I can see from my window that the sky is now gray.
They seduce each other with words so charming,
it starts raining with love, passion and all the yearning.
Though my window I can see that it is now violently storming
As a gentlemen he has made the first move
then she follows, blowing a kiss to approve
and we feel how the breeze has now stronger groove.
The lovers cannot take the distance any longer
in less than a second it is impossible to go and wander
’cause the passion and strength keeps getting stronger
They have only but a few hours to together spend
They have to count, they know the are condemned ,
so they forget about the world and who they might offend.
Unstoppable Rain pours while Wind loudly howls
but it filters through the window during the long night hours,
this much water is impossible to dry. I need more towels!
Don’t get them wrong, their raging destruction is a pantomime
just a protest for being apart all this time
They want to be noticed, their love is transcendental and divine
They accomplisehd their purpose, leaving all this destruction,
but seriously, it isn’t any worse than human corruption
pulluting the oceans and air, just for a few goods production
There is no knowing when will Wind and Rain will meet again
it all goes back to normal and their love is constrain
but their passion is eternal and nothing vain.
The end.
